Dyslexia is commonly defined as "a learning difficulty that primarily affects the skills involved in accurate and fluent word reading and spelling." However, for the approximately 10% of the global population who experience it, dyslexia is much more than a definition—it shapes various aspects of daily life.

The Prevalence and Impact of Dyslexia

Dyslexia affects people across all backgrounds and intelligence levels. Despite its prevalence, millions remain undiagnosed. It is estimated that over 780 million people worldwide have dyslexia, yet a significant proportion are unaware of their condition. Without proper recognition, many individuals struggle to access the support they need, impacting their education, careers, and personal lives.

Challenges in Diagnosis and Representation

Many individuals, myself included, spend years uncertain about their dyslexic status. Without a formal diagnosis, people often navigate educational and professional environments without the necessary support. This underrepresentation means that many do not receive the guidance required to transform dyslexia from a potential obstacle into a unique strength.

The Mission of Pro Dyslexic

As a dyslexic, degree-educated business professional, I founded Pro Dyslexic to create a community where individuals can access strategies, resources, and support. Our mission is to help dyslexics around the world overcome the barriers of their dyslexia, freeing them to have the career they deserve. Our goal is to break down barriers and provide practical tools to help dyslexic individuals thrive.

Navigating a Resource-Rich Yet Overwhelming Landscape

Today, more resources and tools than ever are available to assist those with dyslexia, including assistive technologies and specialised learning strategies. However, awareness and accessibility remain significant challenges. Dyslexia impacts not only education but also relationships, careers, self-esteem, and mental health. Without proper support, individuals may feel isolated and overwhelmed.

Overcoming Emotional Barriers

Even when solutions exist, emotional barriers can make it difficult for individuals to seek help. Without guidance, they may miss opportunities to unlock their full potential, and society, in turn, misses out on their unique contributions. When given the right support, dyslexic individuals have been shown to excel in problem-solving, creativity, and innovation—skills that are invaluable in a wide range of fields.

A Personal Journey

I understand the feelings of being lost and underestimated. However, I also know that with understanding and support, dyslexia can become a powerful asset. If someone like me, who grew up in care and didn’t finish high school, can harness dyslexia for success, so can you.

You call yourself a dyslexic and you say it is more than difficulty reading. Is this a psychosocial difficulty or a personal disability. I have taught the teachers of dyslexics for 35 years and there is still so much to learn. Your personal experience tells me a little more.

Hi Robert, thank you for taking the time to read the blog and teaching the many teachers who have gone on to support Dyslexics over the last 35 years.

The issues faced by people with dyslexia are far-reaching; being dyslexic can lead to depression, anxiety, imposter syndrome, and so much more. The results of which leave no corner of our lives untouched. Most days, I hear stories of how being dyslexic has negatively impacted people's lives; that's why it's vitally important not just to change the way dyslexia is understood but also to level the playing field, creating a fair and equal environment for all to succeed.

So, thank you for being a part of that change. If you'd like…
